Experience Speech and Hearing Sciences

Everyone deserves the opportunity to communicate. As a student in Speech and Hearing Sciences, you will gain the skills and experiences to help a wide range people to reach their full potential while developing your own focus of expertise.

Like most of our students, you are probably aiming for a stimulating professional career, and intend to study for a vocational qualification in Speech and Language Therapy, Audiology, Hearing Aid Dispensing or British Sign Language Interpreting in Specialist Areas. If your focus is research, you can analyse the latest discoveries in these fields, or experiment in almost any aspects of human communication: perhaps bilingualism, or the social factors that influence language and communication, or psychological and physical aspects of speech production. Our cutting-edge, world-leading research means you can meaningfully contribute to shaping the future, particularly if you complete a dissertation at masters or doctoral level.

Indeed, our speech research laboratory has a wide range of equipment dedicated to the analysis of speech and disorders of communication. It is shared with the Clinical Audiology Speech and Language (CASL) Research Centre, which hosts a range of projects and researchers, bringing blue-skies thinking and applied innovation into the heart of our endeavours.

Your clinical training and practice will typically be with external providers like the National Health Service, and so we have dedicated placement teams. They liaise with the NHS and other relevant institutions and health care providers so you can receive carefully supervised experience in real world conditions. Audiological clinic rooms provide modern equipment that permits learning on campus, and we have an articulatory research clinic on-site for specialised projects.
