ɬ invites business and community members to learn about its work

By Press Office

A new public artwork, osteoporosis, dementia, autism and employer mentoring for students are just a few of the topics that will be discussed at ɬ’s annual open event in April.

The evening event, ‘Local Impact and Global Reach’, will provide people with a fascinating insight into the range of work that takes place at the University.

Designed to appeal to representatives from business, industry, healthcare and voluntary organisations, along with members of the local community and ɬ graduates, the event will include talks, exhibition stalls, tours and refreshments. Visitors will be able to chat to researchers and academic staff at an informal fair, where they can learn about a diverse range of research initiatives, community engagement projects, and wealth creation work being delivered by the University’s School of Health Sciences and School of Arts, Social Sciences and Management.

Pamela Woodburn, Chair of the University Court, said: “In the year we celebrate the 150th anniversary of ɬ, we are delighted to welcome people from across Edinburgh and the Lothians to find out how we address our local community and national and international concerns.

“We have lots of really interesting research and initiatives to showcase – from promoting the rights of children and our autism advisory work, to our student film projects and our public artwork, the latter which has been commissioned as part of our 150th anniversary celebrations.”

Pamela confirmed: “The event will allow us to update partners, policy makers, people in the local community, alumni and friends on the impact of our work – both locally and globally. Our informal fair, with a wide selection of stalls, coupled with a brief presentation and a Question & Answer session, provides a great way for people to find out how the University might benefit their organisation, or them individually. It will be a very sociable evening, so it’s a helpful platform through which to make connections with staff and visitors.”

Following a £2.1m investment, visitors will also be invited, as part of the event, to take an optional tour of the University’s fabulous new study spaces in its Learning Resource Centre.
